The artistic production of the Khotan oasis reveals all the elements of an active and creative Buddhist center along the Silk Road during the 1st millennium CE. Archaeological discoveries of the last decade, especially the investigations conducted in the eastern and northern areas of the oasis (as in Dandān-oiliq and Domoko), open new possibilities for research on cultural interrelations in Khotan as reflected through the Buddhist art, particularly as one that predates the period of the Islamization of the area.
