Art and iconography of this ancient religion of Tibet, are recently the object of growing attention and research. The mythical origins of Bön go back to the master Tönpa Shenrab, whose legendary biography, full of episodes, a real epic, has inspired number of painted representations. They testify together of some variants. The Guimet Museum preserves, for its part, an important series of narrative paintings depicting this theme, which examples are few outside Tibet. Tibetan iconography shows the master in an original way, that stands out from the Buddhist iconography, despite some formal similarities due to mutual influences that have marked the development of these two currents in the country during its history.
