Tibetan rituals of weather-making through the worship of Tsongkhapa

The fame of the renowned Tibetan master Tsongkhapa (Tsong kha pa /Blo bzang grags pa/, 1357-1419) is connected with the origins of the youngest sect of Tibetan Buddhism called Gelug or Ganden (Dge lugs/ Dga ‘ ldan). He is also well-known as an influential scholar in the Land of Snow. The paper will, however, deal with the role Tsongkhapa plays in the wider society of Tibet. It will firstly focus on the origins of Tsongkhapa ‘s mantra Migtsema (dmigs brtse ma). Then it will come to the rituals based on Migtsema, among which the most influential seems to be the large collection of 11 ritual texts (las tshogs) by Panchen Lama Lobsang Palden Yeshe (Blo bzang dpal ldan ye shes, 1738-1780). It contains also the ritual text causing rain to fall and protecting from hail. This collection probably served as an example for the later Gelugpa authors. This paper intends to place Tsongkhapa into the ritual context and to raise questions concerning the perception of masters in Tibet.
