The Demons of Māra’s Army: From Text to Image, A Comparative Examination through Gandhāra, the Monasteries of Haḍḍa, and Ancient India.

Conference on Zoom, Tuesday September 24 at 6 PM, by Dr. Alexandra Vanleene, Researcher in Archaeology, Specialist in Buddhist Art and Archeology of Gandhāra, Independent Gandhara Project Academic Advisor, Harvard FAS CAMLab.

To what extent did Buddhist artists remain faithful to religious texts? This communication is dedicated to the description of the Assault of Māra’s Army in the literary tradition of the Buddhist canon, with particular attention to the depiction of the demon-warrior sons of Māra, confronted with their representation in the art of the Haḍḍa monasteries (Afghanistan), alongside parallels in Gandhāran and Indian art.
