Bon iconography has both unique features as well as shared characteristics with Buddhism. Differentiating a Bon painting from a Buddhist composition requires some knowledge of the unshared specialized symbols for each. The use of indigenous animals and the shapes of hats can also be important. Regardless of the complexity of an iconographic figure there are actually only a small number of symbols that need to be learned and identified.
