by Valerie Zaleski, Heritage curator at the National Museum of Asian Arts Guimet.

A review of mobile paintings and banners from Cave 17 from the Mogaoku site near Dunhuang, which are now housed in the Guimet Museum, was first raised in order to identify, if possible more accurately, some Images somewhat enigmatic or designated generically. Over and above the few examples initially aimed at, a need to re-evaluate, or at least to question the interpretations given for granted, was then imposed. This re-reading, enlightened by the crossing of significant elements, is also part of a more general perspective fed by recent research.
